Kratom is not strictly an opioid, but its effects are comparable to opioids like morphine and codeine. The active component of kratom is mitragynine. Mitragynine relieves pain by binding to opioid receptors in the brain.

This activity may be responsible for the antidepressant and antianxiety benefits observed by certain users of kratom. There is currently a paucity of research on the effects of kratom on mood.

A study found that kratom improves mood and reduces anxiety in certain users. The researchers also highlighted the sedative properties of kratom. It has not yet been determined whether adverse effects such as sedation can negate the stated advantages.
